No matter the type of floors you have in your home, they’re all going to need your attention to look their best. However, cleaning your floors doesn’t have to require loads of elbow grease. We’ve got a few quick tips for cleaning any type of floor.
Hardwood floors:
If you have waxed wood floors you don’t need to do much except sweep or use a vacuum a few times a week. For wood floors that aren’t waxed, you can use a wood-safe flooring cleaner once in a while with a mostly dry mop. Your hardwood floors don’t need much water on them at all. Otherwise stick to sweeping or vacuuming.
Laminate floors: It’s important not to get water underneath your laminate floors. Stick with spot cleaning with a mop when necessary but otherwise vacuum (on floor mode, not carpet) and sweep frequently.
Vinyl floors: Real Simple has a great technique for keeping your vinyl floors looking great. “For weekly cleaning, use Reichert’s spritz-and-dry mop technique to keep tile floors looking fresh: Gently mix 1/4 cup vinegar in a 16-ounce spray bottle with 1 drop of dish soap and warm water. Spray the floor one section at a time and wipe with a damp microfiber mop as you go.” This also works for porcelain tile floors.
Natural stone: Natural stone floors are best cleaned with a mirco-fiber cloth and hot water to avoid getting any chemicals into the stone itself.
