Step 1: Act Fast.
Step 2: Blot liquid spills with white towels or plain white paper towels. Avoid anything with prints or colors because that color might bleed onto the carpet. If your spill is semi-solid, use a spoon or fork to scoop up pieces. DON’T SCRUB OR USE A BRUSH.
Step 3: If you have it, use a CRI Certified Seal of Approval carpet cleaning product. If you don’t have one of these on hand, you can check out the Spot Solver. It has all sorts of carpet stain removal tricks for different stains and then will provide you with the best options for cleaning. For example if you have a coffee stain, the Spot Solver gives several suggestions including: Vinegar Solution – Mix one (1) cup of WHITE vinegar per two (2) cups of water. The Carpet and Rug institute even has a separate section specifically for pet owners that includes basic carpet care tips and information on cleaning stains. You can also find more detailed cleaning tips for pet stains in the Spot Solver section.
