Now that you’ve got lovely, cozy carpet installed in your home, it’s important to take care of it. Well-maintained carpet will last years. Caring for your carpet is fairly easy and just takes a little bit of effort each week.
A great way to start caring for your carpet from the get go is to take your shoes off before walking on it. This can be difficult to get used to, but it’s a great way to make sure extra dirt, mud, or snow doesn’t get tracked onto your new carpet.
Then, make sure to vacuum frequently. You want to vacuum high traffic areas once or twice a week. Lower traffic areas you can vacuum a little less often. Make sure your vacuum is on the right setting for carpet (some even have multiple settings for high and low pile). Use a clean filter and empty your canister vacuum after each use.
Avoid eating in areas where you have carpet when possible. While not always convenient, not eating in areas of the house where carpet is means there is a much smaller chance of spills and stains.
Take care of spills as soon as they happen. There are lots of great carpet cleaning products out there, but we like to ask that you do the following first. Blot the area with a towel to remove as much of the spill as possible. Add a little water to the area and blot more. If you need to use a stain remover, try mixing baking soda with a little water. Let that sit on the stain for at least 10 minutes, and then use warm water to clean the area. Always blot, never scrub the fibers.
Finally, make sure Fido has clean feet! Keep a damp towel by the door so that when Fido comes in from his walk you can wipe off his feet. Better yet, train him to wipe them off on a mat by the door!
